Time to get cracking: Our annual Easter egg hunt is this Saturday; kids expected to break out of their shells

This just in: Tahiti Village safety and security director Rich Ingling says to be on the lookout for a roaming horde of ravenous Easter egg collectors this Saturday morning, April 19, in the vicinity of the Island Courtyard and the Lazy River.

Don’t be fooled by their innocent appearance, Rich advises. These mostly young and adorable hunter-gatherers will stop at nothing to fill their baskets to the brim with plastic candy-filled eggs, of which a goodly bounty of 3,300 is up for grabs.

The annual Easter egg hunt is the most anticipated event on our spring activities calendar. The 2013 hunt attracted approximately 200 youngsters, and this year’s is expected to draw at least that many.

Hunters will meet at 9 a.m. inside the Island Courtyard, then descend upon the Lazy River to search for the loot. The two-hour event concludes with prize contests, an Easter basket raffle, and a performance by the delightful parrots from Squawk! It’s a great time for the whole family.

Squawk Is Returning For More Shows

Tahiti Village is going to the birds this Saturday

Imagine an upside down world in which humans had the brains of birds (we know what you’re thinking; just play along) and birds the brains of humans, and in that world the birds could train the humans to fly, catch worms and say “Polly wanna cracker.” In short, teach them to do many of the things birds can do all for the enjoyment of the birds. It would make for fascinating viewing and undoubtedly draw numerous feathered spectators to watch – provided the birds had had the foresight to turn it into an entertainment spectacle.

That’s kind of what Squawk! the Show is like here in our right-side up world, where the birds – parrots, to be specific – perform amazing feats once thought to be the purview of humans. Fortunately for us their trainers, Debbie and Mark Obarka, did have the foresight to turn it into an entertainment spectacle. We are delighted to present it to you this Saturday night, April 5, and each and every Saturday night in April. Showtime is 6 p.m. in the Island Courtyard.

If you didn’t think it was possible for birds to paint, play cards, solve math problems and read minds – yes, read minds! – this quickly moving hour-long show will amaze, amuse and remove all your preconceived notions about what our fine feathered friends are capable of. (That is, if you had any preconceived notions. Who knew?)

Debbie, Mark and their amazing pet parrots have worked all over the country and been seen by more than 2 million people at their live performances.  They have appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, Animal Planet’s PetStar and America’s Got Talent.

Don’t miss Squawk! the Show during its limited engagement at Tahiti Village. In addition to their Saturday night shows, the parrots will also perform at our annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 19, from 9-11 a.m. at the Island Courtyard.

Pumpkin pie masks prove the most horrifying of all at Oktoberfeast, our fun and festive Halloween event

Well it turns out gluttony, second of the Seven Deadly Sins and the leading cause of Tight Pants Syndrome, can also induce Yecch! Face, a condition common to culinary consumption contests but especially – and to a horrifying degree – those in which pumpkin pies are the main course.

Witnesses to the two pumpkin pie eating contests at Saturday’s Oktoberfeast, our celebration of the Halloween season, were overcome by the same strange impulse that instructs people driving by an accident scene to slow down and look. In this case it was the revolting faces of ravenous pie eaters.

We congratulate adult winner Jermaine Seiuli and child champ Noah Gonzalez, both of Las Vegas, on their hard-to-stomach victories and thank all the competitors for participating.

If you weren’t here to see it, don’t beat yourself up. We have photos! Look for complete Oktoberfeast coverage in the next addition of the Tahiti Village Vacationer. Coming soon!

Celebrate the season with us Saturday at Oktoberfeast!

Oktoberfeast is coming to Tahiti Village! Join us on Saturday, October 26 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Island Courtyard for a night of fun, food and entertainment. We’ll have food trucks, beer, music, games and costume contests as we celebrate Halloween and Day of the Dead at our beautiful outdoor venue. Oktoberfeast at Tahiti Village promises a great evening for the whole family. Best of all, admission is absolutely free. If you’re looking for something different to do on a Saturday night in Vegas, Oktoberfeast is just the ticket. Don’t miss it!

Drag racer Terry McMillen, in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, set to appear at Tahiti Village

Terry McMillen, our favorite Top Fuel drag racer, will make his second Tahiti Village appearance of 2013 on Wednesday, Oct. 23 as he prepares to qualify for the NHRA Toyota Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Terry will not only race his pink gator-themed Amalie Oil dragster again, but show it off right here at Tahiti Village in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Terry and his dragster will make a special appearance from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the main lobby building. You can meet Terry, sit in his 8,000-horsepower dragster and enter to win tickets to the NHRA Toyota Nationals. With a donation to the She4Life foundation you will also have the opportunity to put the name of a friend or loved one who has fought or is fighting cancer on Terry’s dragster. She4Life is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for breast cancer patients and their families through unique programs and partnerships.

Tahiti Village rooms and suites are still  available for the NHRA Toyota Nationals weekend. For booking our special Terry McMillen package rate, click here and use the code TERRY13.

“This is always a special time of year for our team,” Terry said. “Tahiti Village is helping make it even better by allowing us to use their beautiful venue as a backdrop to help She4Life.”

As we did at his last appearance in April, we are staging an electric slot car competition featuring 1:24 scale versions of Terry’s dragster. Contestants will compete for prizes on a Top Fuel Dragster Pro Racing Dragstrip that includes a 13-foot track and an LED Christmas Tree, electronic starting gate, electronic finish line and a red foul light. It’s as close as you’ll ever get to the real thing!

Terry is also bringing his own Eliminator game to determine the Fastest Thumb in the West. Eliminator contestants holding push button pendant switches compete against one another or individually on a Pro Tree timing system that simulates a drag strip Christmas tree. The lights descend from yellow to amber to green, with the first thumb off the depressed red fire button declared the winner.

Our activities staff will also be on hand to serve free popcorn and lemonade. We are proud to be the home resort of Terry and his crew when they make their biannual visits to Las Vegas.

Professional qualifying for the NHRA Toyota Nationals begins Friday, October 25, with racing on Saturday and Sunday. Please click on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway link below for ticket information.

Summer luau concluding this Sunday, rain or shine

This Sunday’s scheduled luau will be the last in a 2013 season that saw our perennial weekly summer event change days from Saturday to Sunday night and move from its traditional poolside venue to the Island Courtyard. Heavy rain forced the cancellation of the luau the past two weekends, and more inclement weather is in the forecast for this Sunday. We will closely monitor the weather throughout the weekend and make a decision to go on with the show or, regretfully, cancel for an unprecedented third straight weekend. We hope to hold off on a decision to cancel as close to the 6 p.m. start time as possible. Despite the recent weather issues, this year’s luau has been well-received and drawn consistently large crowds throughout the summer. We look forward to another great season in 2014. We hope to see you there!

Dancing seniors show us how it’s done at summer luau

We are dubious we’ll be walking when we’re 72 let alone dancing with the joyous abandon of the couple in the video beneath the photo. This is what happens when we ask you to send in your summer vacation photos from Tahiti Village– we get a really inspiring, made-for-YouTube moment as well.

Hubert and Helen Loupe, youthful 72-year-olds from Louisiana, were attending the June 16 luau with family when they were compelled by a mysterious inner force – or more likely the infectious Polynesian rhythms of Hot Lava – to rise from their table and dance like no one’s watching.

“They don’t get to dance often,” said their daughter, Melissa Loupe Irvin, “so the family really enjoyed watching them.”

We hope you enjoy it as well – and will be thusly inspired to send us your own photos and videos. We’ll definitely find a place for them.

First summer luau of 2013 draws 150+ to Island Courtyard for Sunday night fun, food and great entertainment

The first luau of 2013 got underway at a new venue on a new night, to the benefit of both. More than 150 people descended on the Island Courtyard this past Sunday night, and if they had any apprehensions that our popular summer event wasn’t still poolside on Saturday, their worries were quickly allayed. Attendees enjoyed an island buffet with three entrees (one more than in previous years) and authentic Polynesian-style entertainment from Hot Lava, whose revved-up show was easily visible thanks to the Island Courtyard’s cozy confines. The updated menu consisted of pulled pork, marinated grilled chicken, a shrimp stir fry, white rice, two kinds of salad (fruit and macaroni), coconut cake and free lemonade and island punch. The Hot Lava band entertained during dinner with a repertoire of island favorites and a surplus of witty repartee. The trio then lent its support to the group’s lovely hula girls and tribal warriors, bantering with the audience between dances and the amazing fire ritual.  It was a great evening of food and entertainment in what promises to be the best luau season yet. Don’t miss it on your next visit. VIP and general admission tickets are available for purchase in advance or on the day of the show. Please see the concierge.  For more information click on the above photos to be directed the luau page on our website. We hope you have a great summer and look forward to seeing you soon!
