Changes in store for this year’s luau; 2013

This year’s luau is getting a makeover. Not only is it moving to a new day and location (details in our upcoming newsletter), but the menu is undergoing a change as well. Rather than spring it on you unawares at the first luau, we thought it prudent for a small test group of Tahiti Village employees to take the first brave bites and offer feedback. Staff members were presented with four main entrées and three salads plus jasmine rice, sweet Hawaiian rolls and dessert, all courtesy of Lisa Bobak from Tahiti Village catering.

Displayed side by side by side in heated Schaefer boxes, the main courses consisted of tilapia with orange sauce, a fresh vegetable stir fry with shrimp, grilled Polynesian chicken with a citrus marinade, and sweet and sour pulled pork. Fruit was the primary ingredient in one salad, macaroni in the other. A zingy island slaw completed the trio. The jasmine rice was al dente with long, springy grains. Dessert consisted of a banana pudding with strawberry sauce that satisfied everyone’s sweet tooth without being too sweet – not easy.  After the first pass, the tasters did their due diligence to validate their initial impressions. Yes, they went back for seconds. Opinions varied from person to person and from dish to dish, and if in the end this first round of samples didn’t yield a consensus on a finished menu, it at least pointed in a promising direction. We will keep you updated and reveal what Lisa comes up with for her final selections as soon as we know.

Here’s to the wieners! Tahiti Village hot dog eating team relishes dominant effort in Nathan’s contest victory.

While most of us would rather not consider the contents of a hot dog, nearly all of us think nothing of devouring the delicious All-American favorite at picnics, ballparks and of course the traditional hot dog eating contest, where the greatest gluttony wins a trophy. With that in mind we praise our very own Weenie Gobblers for winning the team competition in the Las Vegas version of Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs hot dog eating contest. Gorging themselves against other resort properties last weekend at New York-New York, the Weenie Gobblers consumed 28 hot dogs in six minutes, three more than their nearest competition. Please join us in congratulating vice president of marketing operations Rosie Fuentes and Lou Galindo, Adrian Medina, Sean Jackson and Jan Jara representing our field marketing department for their outstanding achievement. We can only hope they consumed a commensurate number of Pepto shots.

Terry McMillen’s first visit of 2013 to Tahiti Village features the drag racer, his dragster and a drag strip

Terry McMillen’s first Tahiti Village appearance of 2013, on April 3, attracted a large group of owners and visitors to the main lobby entrance, where they met the NHRA drag racer, sat in his vehicle and competed for great prizes.
We set up a 13-foot electric slot car track with matching Terry McMillen dragsters, and Terry brought his own Eliminator game to determine the Fastest Thumb in the West. Slot car race winners and Eliminator champion Teresa Bartholomew earned their choice of NHRA race tickets or a three-night stay at the resort. Bartholomew, a visitor from Salt Lake City, registered a lightning .404 time early in the day and watched it hold up over the duration of the three-hour event to win the title. Eliminator contestants holding push button pendant switches compete against one another or individually on a .400 Pro Tree timing system that simulates a drag strip Christmas tree. The lights descend from yellow to amber to green, with the first thumb off the depressed red fire button declared the winner. With our activities staff also on hand to serve free popcorn and lemonade, it was a great day to be on property and enjoy another visit from our favorite drag racer. We wish Terry the best of luck at the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals this weekend at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. We look forward to his next visit in the fall. For more information on Terry please visit his website here.

Treasure seekers scramble for bacon’s breakfast friend at our annual Easter Egg Hunt – it wasn’t over easy

Τhe annual Easter egg grab, the most anticipated event on our spring activity calendar, attracted upwards of 200 youngsters this past Saturday to the Lazy River, where they filled waiting baskets with plastic candy-filled eggs. The colorful bounty was hidden under lounge chairs and in the lush green foliage of the hunting grounds. The latter proved no impediment whatsoever to these ravenous collectors, who waded into the thick jungle to gather the treasure. The eggs, according to Tahiti Village activities manager Britny Flores, contained such Easter candy as Sweet Tarts, Starburst and Nerds. No wonder they were in such demand. The event ended with challenging prize contests and a raffle for Easter baskets and gift certificates to Tahiti Joe’s. It was a great conclusion to a fun day for the kids and their parents.

Take the Terry McMillen Drag Race Challenge here at Tahiti Village to win great prizes. It’ll be fun for all!

April 3 marks the first of Terry McMillen’s two yearly visits to Tahiti Village, the drag racer’s home resort when the NHRA Drag Racing Series makes its biannual stop in Las Vegas. This latest appearance promises to be the best one yet, or at least the most eventful. As always you will have the opportunity to meet Terry and see his 8,000 horsepower Amalie Oil dragster, but this time you can also compete for great prizes.

We are holding an electric slot car competition featuring 1:24 scale versions of Terry’s dragster in two age categories, kids and adults. The winner of each category will race Terry for the chance to win NHRA tickets, a free stay at Tahiti Village, a die cast model of Terry’s dragster, or one of the slot car replicas. Contestants will compete on a Top Fuel Dragster Pro Racing Dragstrip. It includes a 13-foot track and an LED Christmas Tree, electronic starting gate, electronic finish line and a red foul light. It’s as close as you’ll ever get to the real thing!

Stop by our main entrance between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. to meet Terry, compete for prizes, or just enjoy free popcorn and lemonade. If you can’t make the event in person, you can watch it on Google Hangout. Look for our announcement on Twitter.
