Things to do in Vegas During Christmas

When you think of a festive Christmas destination, does Las Vegas immediately come to mind? If it doesn’t, take a look at our list of things to do during your time in Vegas this Christmas. And then, see if a jaunt around the city doesn’t sound like the perfect way to spend time with friends or family during the holidays.

Cowboy Christmas Gift Show

The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is a major draw in December in Las Vegas, and it acts as the perfect backdrop for the Cowboy Christmas Gift Show. This show is a 440,000 square-foot exhibit of western-themed gifts. You’ll find the Cowboy Christmas Gift Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center every year around Christmas time. This year, it will take place December 1-10.

Cactus Garden Lighting

Las Vegas is in the desert. Cacti live in the desert. Therefore, it makes sense to decorate cactus groves with Christmas lights, right? The folks over at the legendary Ethel M Chocolate factory sure think so, and they deliver a fun and whimsical take on the traditional Christmas decoration philosophy. Check out the lights, then stick around and try some of their handmade chocolates.

Ride the High Roller

The iconic High Roller Ferris wheel, the largest in the world, gets the full holiday treatment during the Christmas season as it is embellished with almost 2,000 vivid LED lights. See all of Las Vegas from 55 stories high, and take in the vistas from comfortable pods instead of open air seats. Located right on the Strip, you can’t beat the views.

Go to the Islands

Ok, you’re not really going to go to the islands, but have you considered that you can experience a tropical oasis just minutes from the Strip? That’s right, what better way to amp up the excitement of the holiday season than by scheduling a visit to Tahiti Village Resort & Spa to indulge in a Christmas experience involving palm trees, shimmering pools, sumptuous food and a relaxed ambiance? Celebrate the season with some island style.

Live Music Venues

There are several amazing places to enjoy live music in Las Vegas, but for the ultimate experience this Christmas, head down to Fremont Street and see why this area is quickly becoming the hub for entertainment in Vegas. Headline-worthy acts are on the roster throughout the Christmas week and New Year’s Eve brings even more opportunity to rock out to your favorite group. From big name acts to tribute bands, you’ll find an eclectic mix when you discover Fremont Street during the holidays.

Las Vegas is the place to be this Christmas, especially if you’re looking for new and exciting things to do to cap off 2016. From music to museums, dining to dancing, you’ll find it all this holiday season in Las Vegas.

Rodeo Week for the Whole Family

Las Vegas is home to one of the finest rodeo experiences on Earth – one that is fun for the whole family! This week-long event is held each year at the Thomas & Mack Center, and the 2016 National Finals Rodeo (NFR) series runs from December 1st to the 10th. If you’re staying in Las Vegas during this ten-day stretch, make sure that you carve out some time for one of the most sought-after sporting events of the year.

How to Order Tickets

Visit the TicketCity’s National Finals Rodeo page, where you can select from among a wide range of seats located throughout the Thomas & Mack Center. Ticket prices range from $59 all the way up to several hundred. Though the center holds about 17,000 people during the rodeo, you’ll still want to order tickets in advance to ensure you get in.

Where Should I Sit?

The Thomas & Mack Center delivers a terrific experience from almost any seat in the house, with seats available in the upper level (sections 201-236) for those who like a bird’s eye view of all the action. If you want to feel the action more closely, consider purchasing tickets in sections 101-122, with 101 and 122 positioned right at the Bucking Chute and 110-112 located near the Roping action. There isn’t a bad seat to be had, but those closer to the floor will deliver a more intense experience.

What Events Are Scheduled?

The top fifteen money-winners in each of seven unique events will compete each day. The events include bareback riding, bull riding, saddle bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, team roping, and barrel racing. This prestigious rodeo will ultimately decide which cowboys will earn the gold buckle and raise their arms as world champions for the year.

How Do I Get There?

If you’re visiting from out of town and staying at a local hotel, there are several complimentary shuttle buses that will pick you up and drop you off at the Thomas & Mack Center. Buses pick up from both the Strip and downtown Las Vegas – or hop in a taxi to get to the event. You can rent a car, too, but only consider this option if you’re planning on using it for another trip during the week. Public transportation abounds in Vegas.

Vegas is typically known for more adult-focused entertainment, but there is plenty of kid-friendly activities to add to your itinerary. The 2016 National Finals Rodeo is an exhilarating experience for those of all ages, so pack your boots and cowboy hats, order your tickets today, and get ready for a Western-themed day of excitement that will provide rich memories for years.

Hidden Gems of Las Vegas

What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think Las Vegas? Is it the tourists watching the fountains at the Bellagio, or the $29 all-you-can-eat crab buffets? Trust us, there is so much more to see beyond the glitz and glamor of the Las Vegas Strip. When you’re ready to take your wanderlust beyond the neon lights of the city, consider our list of exciting destinations near Las Vegas.

Did you know that you can…

Visit a Speakeasy?

If you’re looking for something a little different than your normal downtown Las Vegas bar, take a spin over to The Laundry Room. This 28-seat space is in a backroom of the Commonwealth in DTLV, and requires you to text a secret number to make a reservation. You’re then given covert instructions on where to meet!

Participate in an Authentic Luau?

At Tahiti Village, an island-inspired resort just two miles from the Las Vegas Strip, hotel staff members host an authentic luau during the summer season complete with live Polynesian entertainment, drink specials, an island-inspired buffet, and more – all starting at 7 pm every Sunday.

Visit the MGM Lions?

Travel just ten minutes from the center of Las Vegas and encounter the Lion Habitat Ranch, home to more than 40 lions on a 7-acre property. This is the permanent home for the MGM lions, and you can see them up close and personal. You can even feed them if you want!

Drop by the Pinball Hall of Fame?

Visit Tim Arnold, owner of more than 1,000 vintage pinball machines and the driving force behind the LVPCC, or Las Vegas Pinball Collectors Club. Arnold hosts “fun nights” that are open to the public, with proceeds going to charity. Everyone at the Pinball Hall of Fame works as a volunteer.

Fly Through the Air?

Do you have a desire to fly at speeds of up to 60 mph? If so, Flightlinez Ziplines is for you! First, complete a short hike up a moderate hill. Then, strap in and get ready to glide across the open expanses of Bootleg Canyon. They’ll even come pick you up from your hotel if you’re an out-of-state visitor to Las Vegas!

Check out Zappos Headquarters?

Downtown Las Vegas has undergone a major revitalization over the past several years, and Zappos has been central to the rebirth of this area. You can now tour the Zappos facility and see just how much the company’s culture shines through in everything it does.

Vegas is home to so many hidden gems that will captivate those of all ages. Break away from the Strip and seek out new opportunities to explore this incredible city and its surrounding areas.

What We Know So Far – Vegas’ First Hockey Team

The people have spoken and the league has delivered. Las Vegas is now home to a National Hockey League team. Yes, the NHL is coming to the Sin City.

As of July 7th, the soon-to-not-be nameless Las Vegas NHL team had officially secured its 15,000 NHL season ticket holder. The league’s governing body unanimously approved the sin city expansion, making it the 31st franchise in the league, one squad less than what the NFL fields.

And while we don’t know the name just yet, below is a list of things we do know.

The Owner Just Might Be the NHL’s Most Interesting Man

The NHL is the first top-tier professional sports league to gamble on the desert city, though many think it’s no gamble at all. Included in that camp is none other than Bill Foley, West Point graduate and reclusive mortgage financier turned winery tycoon. Foley bet a large portion of his farm (or shall we say vineyard?) on the success of the new franchise. His wager? A cool $500 million. The team is owned by Black Night Sports & Entertainment, which is led by Foley and named after the Army Black Nights.

Vegas Knows Hockey

Since 1997, Vegas has hosted Frozen Fury, a pre-season matchup between two rival squads: the LA Kings and the Colorado Avalanche. The event is held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The NHL Awards ceremonies are also held in the City of Sin. And back in 1991, an outdoor exhibition game was held between the Kings and the Rangers of New York.

The Team with No Name Will Hit the Ice in 2017

On June 22, 2016, the AP reported that Vegas had indeed won an expansion bid. During a press conference later on that day, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the franchise had been awarded to the Las Vegas, beating out Canadian hopeful Quebec City. The Vegas team, with no current players and no designation, will take the ice in the 2017–18 NHL season. Its originally proposed name, the Las Vegas Black Nights, has been thrown out. The team will play at the T-Mobile Arena and compete in the NHL’s Pacific Division.

The Expansion Draft Will Be Exciting

How does an expansion draft work? Few remember the last one, which occurred before the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild began play in the 2000-01 season.

In the 2017 expansion draft, the Vegas franchise is required to select a player from each NHL team. At least 20 of those selected will be under contract for the upcoming season. The franchise also must adhere to position requirements; it must choose at least fourteen forwards, 9 defensemen, and 3 goalies. In the 2017 NHL draft lottery, the team will enjoy the same odds as the team with the third-lowest point total in the previous season, which guarantees a pick no lower than sixth in the draft’s first round. Vegas picks third in each round from there. Not bad for a newcomer.

For more info on the draft, visit ESPN.

It Couldn’t Come at a Better Time

2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the NHL. Whether it’s coincidence or not remains a mystery but thing’s for sure: the NHL—and Vegas—will never be the same. As the sport continues to gain in popularity, the team should have no problem filling the seats at T-Mobile Arena.

Keep your eyes in the news come September, as the team has promised to unveil its name, logo, colors, and uniforms. Plenty of names have been thrown around already.

See you in Vegas, hockey fans.

Highlighting Las Vegas’ Best Festivals

Festivals in Las Vegas are like no other festivals in the world. They are eclectic, exciting, and sometimes over-the-top. Each year more festivals are added to an already bustling event calendar. Here’s a look at some of the best Vegas festivals you won’t want to miss.

Rock in Rio USA

Although the next Rock in Rio USA won’t happen until 2017, it deserves an honorable mention. This enormously popular event began in Rio de Janeiro as a tribute to serious rock n’ roll.

In 2015, Las Vegas was home to the first-ever Rock in Rio held in the United States, and it was a huge success. The event featured several stages, shopping and dining opportunities, and even a Ferris wheel and a zip line.

Viva Las Vegas

Four days of Rockabilly music, an eclectic Tiki Pool Party, the famous Guitar Geek Festival Show, and one of the world’s finest car shows all rolled into one. This festival is great for anyone looking for a unique experience full of plenty of exciting and different activities including a pin-up model contest.

Viva Las Vegas is vintage all the way through, and you can get in on the action from April 14-17, 2016.

I Heart Radio

The I Heart Radio Music Festival features the biggest names from a myriad of genres — rock, country, pop, and hip-hop. This two-day event features two stages, one for veteran performers and the other for up-and-coming stars.

The lineup for the 2016 festival is yet to be released, but you know it’s going to be big — just like the previous five years! Although tickets are not on sale yet, be sure to buy them early as they sell out every year. The Festival takes place in September of 2016.

The San Gennaro Feast

Five days of celebrating all things Italian, this epicurean delight is held bi-annually to honor the Patron Saint of Naples Italy, San Gennaro. This Las Vegas staple is one of the most exciting and delicious festivals of the year.

The 37th installment of the festival takes place from May 4-8, and it will feature food vendors, arts and crafts, more than 50 performers, and amusement rides. You’re not going to want to miss this fun family-friendly event, even if you’re not Italian!

Tips for Attending a Festival in Las Vegas

Weather

The weather in Las Vegas can be brutal for the unprepared. Be sure to stay hydrated, wear sunblock, and pack a coat for the cool, desert nights.

Accommodations

Plan and book accommodations well in advance for your festival stay in Las Vegas. Lodging fills up quickly during festival season, and if you don’t book early, you could end up paying more for less.

The best suites in Las Vegas are those close to where the festivals take place. Tahiti Village is located close to several major freeways and is just minutes from the iconic Las Vegas Strip.

Transportation

Make use of public transportation, or even hotel shuttles. If you’re attending one of the larger festivals, you don’t want to have to worry about parking. Leave the driving to someone else, and make use of the public transit system. Las Vegas also has a thriving Uber network and taxi service.

Las Vegas festivals are a great way to experience the city. Get your groove on with titillating sounds, world-class entertainment, culinary adventures, and cutting edge art. It’s a scene that you won’t want to miss.
