Get to Know Vegas Beyond the Lights

Beyond the lights, glitz, and chaos of the Las Vegas Strip lies the chance for real adventure – no gaming involved.

Mention Las Vegas to most people, and they’ll immediately think of the casinos, endless buffets, the Vegas lights, and tourist-trap hot spots that dot Las Vegas Boulevard. And while the Strip certainly has its share of exciting venues and world-class dining opportunities, there is life beyond the 4.2-mile stretch of road between Sahara Avenue and Russell Road, known as “The Strip.” Let’s look at several terrific options for visitors and locals who want to get to know Las Vegas beyond the lights.

Hoover Dam: Just 30 minutes east of Las Vegas lies a marvel of man-made engineering – the Hoover Dam. Known originally as Boulder Dam until it was renamed in 1947, the dam measures 726 feet in height and spans across the entirety of the Black Canyon of the Colorado River – joining Arizona and Nevada in the process. Take time for a tour and learn how to purchase paddle craft and rafting permits that let you launch a kayak, canoe, or personal raft right below the dam. Open 363 days a year (closed only on Thanksgiving and Christmas), the Hoover Dam is an absolute must-see of things to do in Las Vegas.

Lion Habitat Ranch: Henderson, a town on the southeast corner of the Las Vegas Valley, is home to a wide range of exciting destinations – Lion Habitat Ranch is one of them. There are immersive options that let you feed the lions ($800), interact with lion cubs ($200 for two people), dine in close proximity to lions (Feast with the Beasts, variable cost), or simply pay an admission fee and observe the lions up close. Private tours are also available. You definitely don’t want to miss out on this exciting adventure while visiting the desert!

Ethel M Factory Tour & Botanical Garden: If you’re looking for something completely different while visiting Sin City, then look no further! What could be better than combining fresh, rich chocolate with a beautiful natural setting? That’s exactly what you get when you take the Ethel M Chocolate Factory tour. Located in Henderson, just 15 minutes from the Strip, and completely FREE to enjoy, visitors will enjoy learning about the chocolate making process and then have access to a botanical cactus garden that features more than 300 unique plant species.

Pahrump Valley Winery: Take a break from the intensity of Las Vegas and head out to Pahrump – a town about an hour away from Vegas that is home to an award-winning winery, the Pahrump Valley Winery. Their wines have won 86 national awards, including two Double Gold medals. Nevada Magazine voted the winery the Best Restaurant and Best Winery in both 2015 and 2016. Sample their diverse selection of wines and see where the magic happens yourself.

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area: Though the desert may appear dry and featureless at first glance, it is actually a vibrant ecosystem that is home to a variety of plants, animals, and geographic features. And nothing stands out more when looking west from the Las Vegas Strip than Red Rock Canyon. Spanning nearly 200,000 acres and attracting more than two million visitors each year, this area is a goldmine for geo-lovers everywhere. Sandstone walls measure 3,000 feet tall in some places, and La Madre mountain marks the high point in the park with an elevation of 8,154 feet. Get there at just the right time for an awe-inspiring sunrise, easy parking, and minimal crowds to maximize your overall adventure in the rocks and mountains that define the desert.

Vegas has so much to offer and different options when it comes to exploring the areas beyond the bright lights of the Strip, including your choice of lodging. If you’re looking to enjoy all that Vegas has to offer – the excitement, the natural beauty of the surrounding areas, and the ingenious manmade attractions and exhibits, consider a stay here at Tahiti Village Resort & Spa – just two miles away. You’ll find an oasis away from the noise and congestion of the Strip, but you’ll never be more than a few minutes from the action.

Hospitality at its Finest

May 3rd- 5th marks the annual Hospitality Design 2017 Expo & Conference in Vegas, and is the perfect venue to experience all that Vegas has to offer – and what has changed over the years.

If four million Americans all decided to stay in their own hotel room on any given night, there would be plenty of room for everyone at US-based hotels. The hospitality industry is a massive one, commanding $550 billion dollars worldwide from travelers in 2016 alone. And the overall expenditures on both sides of the equation are equally staggering.

Hotels spend incredible sums of money on a variety of things, and inject billions into the world economy as they work alongside vendors and service providers to keep their properties humming. The IRS noted that Marriott spent $190 million just to replace old bedding at its properties recently, and spends $20 million a year on skin-care products for its hotel rooms. With the hospitality industry, as a whole, generating nearly as much revenue as the GDP of Finland, Sweden, and Norway combined, it certainly attracts a lot of attention. And no gathering of hospitality industry trends stands out quite like the Hospitality Design Expo & Conference – held this year in Las Vegas.

What to Expect This Year

The HD Expo has been going strong since 1992, and over the past 25 years it has gained serious momentum as the premier trade show for the hospitality industry. The goal of the show is to:

*Connect industry professionals who can collaborate and turn current challenges and opportunities into real-world solutions.

* Expose up-and-coming designers to key industry decision-makers who can boost the visibility of emerging technologists and artists.

* Offer LU/CEU accredited courses that not only deliver leading-edge industry information, but can also grant educational credits for life-long learners in the field.

* Showcase leaders in the hospitality field who can discuss the ins and outs of managing and growing a successful brand.

The 2017 HD Expo is estimated to pull an expected 17,500 attendees and is a great opportunity for anyone involved in the hospitality field to learn more about the contemporary world of hotels and their related services. Las Vegas is the perfect venue for this type of exposition, as it embodies a true spirit of adaptability that has literally reshaped the skyline over the past 20 years.

Las Vegas has demonstrated how service and the client experience has had to change to keep up with changing tastes, how design features that were once considered unrealistic or even unattainable are now in demand, and how technology has reshaped the way hospitality industry firms do business.

Think about it – for the 40 million or so annual visitors to Las Vegas, how many of them booked their room via an online booking system? Or downloaded the app to enable easier management of their resort stay? Did social media influence their decision? Statistics say that social media is one of the biggest influencers when it comes to making a hotel stay decision. Wi-Fi infrastructure overhauls are another big push. It isn’t acceptable anymore for a hotel guest to not have robust and reliable Wi-Fi on the hotel property. Even SMART room keys, which allow guests to unlock their room doors with a swipe of their smartphone, are quickly replacing the old “credit card-style” room keys. These innovations, and more, will be showcased and discussed at the 2017 HD Expo in Las Vegas.

One of the biggest changes seen in hospitality industry trends in Vegas is a move away from hotels with a “gambler’s Mecca” theme to one of an all-immersive resort experience. Tahiti Village, for example, lies just minutes away from the gaming tables of the Strip, yet pampers guests with an all-encompassing Island theme – perfect for escaping the noise and hustle of the Las Vegas’ Strip. A resort like Tahiti Village is one example of the “New Vegas” – a far cry from the stale, smoke-filled card rooms of yesteryear.

Come check out the HD Expo this year for yourself, or simply book a room in Vegas to see firsthand what hospitality looks like – Vegas-style.

How to Have Fun with Your Tax Return in Vegas

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]You’ve tallied your deductions, completed your 1040, and your tax return has just landed in your bank account. Now it’s time to take that cash and create memories in Las Vegas.

It’s easy to spend money in Las Vegas. You can burn through a hefty chunk of change in an hour at the card tables. Or, drop hundreds on a couple rounds of drinks at any bar in the city. But what about doing something that will create memories that’ll last a lifetime – or at least a story or two to tell your buddies back home? Let’s look at several ways to have fun with your tax return in Vegas this year.

Food: Vegas is home to the $5000 hamburger (the FleurBurger 5000 – available at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino), but there are ways to have fun and experience incredible food without having to take out a second mortgage on your home. Enjoy dinner at the Strip House, select one of their incredible steaks, then prepare to splurge on their famous 24-layer chocolate cake. It will easily feed ten people, and costs $120. It’s something that dreams are made of for die-hard chocolate fans and worth the money.

Or, visit Bazaar Meat at the SLS and order roasted pig for the entire table for about $520. It’s incredible. For the sushi lover out there, Sushi Roko is the sushi destination in Vegas – where you can order the High-Roller Roll, a Bluefin tuna, caviar, and tempura lobster concoction that is a once-in-a-lifetime order for $250. There is no shortage of incredible food options, so be thankful you itemized those deductions so carefully and planned your trip around your tax return.

Adventure: You can work up a real adrenaline high at the poker tables, but consider this – Vegas is home to a wide array of exhilarating attractions and activities that guarantee a return on your investment. Try getting that at the casino. First, embark on a helicopter tour of the Vegas Strip or the surrounding areas. This isn’t as expensive as you might think, and the skilled pilots are adept at showing you all the area has to offer. Maverick Helicopters is a local favorite. They’ll even fly you to valley of Fire State Park for an ethereal yoga class on top of the Red Rock cliffs.

If you’re looking to stay close to Vegas, head down to Fremont Street and ride the Slotzilla Zip Line. For just $20, each member of your party can glide 114 feet above the street across 850 feet of zip line. We recommend reserving a spot at night when the area is lit up. Vegas is about adventure – so allocate those tax return dollars appropriately and create memories that will last a lifetime!

The Resorts: There is no shortage of fabulous places to stay in Las Vegas, but consider using some of your tax return dollars to stay at a relaxing resort that’ll rejuvenate your soul. Tahiti Village is a personal oasis just two miles from the Strip, with an islands theme, delicious food, and a world-class spa. The suites at Tahiti Village are like a home away from home – perfect for both visitors and locals.

Tax season has come and gone – and hopefully you had a little extra spending money deposited into your bank account this year. Take it and start planning your Vegas getaway today. You’ll create memories that will last a lifetime, or at least until next April 15th.

Uncover even more signs of Las Vegas’ past at the Neon Museum

The Neon Museum, encompassing a two-acre outdoor “boneyard” in downtown Las Vegas, is home to more than 150 donated and rescued Strip and downtown signs dating from the 1930s to present day. And it’s about to get even more crowded. The popular attraction is bringing 30 signs out of storage and into the public view, marking the museum’s first expansion since its 2012 opening.

For more information on the expansion, please click here.

The nonprofit Neon Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the city through its indigenous art form, the neon sign! Its collection consists of three components: the Neon Boneyard, the Downtown Gallery and the Las Vegas Signs project.

The Downtown Gallery (Fremont Street at Las Vegas Boulevard) and the Las Vegas Signs Project (located on Las Vegas Boulevard between Sahara and Washington avenues) feature electrified, restored signs installed as public art throughout the downtown area. These signs are available for viewing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Neon Boneyard is available for guided tours Monday through Sunday starting at 10 a.m. Tours routinely fill up, so guests are encouraged to book a tour time in advance on the museum’s website.

It is well worth the visit the next time you’re at Tahiti Village.

Las Vegas Raiders – what a nice ring!

Drag racer Terry McMillen set to make his first 2017 visit to Tahiti Village. This time get twice the Terry!

When the NHRA Nationals pays its biannual visit to Las Vegas, you can count on Terry McMillen doing two things: 1) Sending his 8,000-horsepower dragster down the track at more than 300 miles per hour and 2) staying here at Tahiti Village when he’s through.

As the official resort of Terry and his crew, we’ll be hosting a meet and greet with the top fuel drag racer from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, ahead of his appearance at the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Terry will be chatting with fans, signing autographs and posing for photos next to his Amalie Oil dragster from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. beneath the porte cochere. You may even have the opportunity to sit in the cockpit! Terry’s team will unload the dragster at approximately 10 a.m. Refreshments and popcorn will be provided.

If you can’t get enough Terry in the morning, he’ll be making an encore appearance that night during our weekly owners’ night event from 6-8 p.m. at 17˚ South Booze & Bites, our onsite bar and bistro.

For more information on Terry, please visit www.terrymcmillen.com. For more information on the race, please go to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway website at www.lvms.com or www.nhra.com, the National Hot Rod Association’s site.

St. Patrick’s Day for the Whole Family

Get your Irish on this St. Patrick’s Day by celebrating with your whole family in Las Vegas.

When you think of St. Patrick’s Day, what comes to mind? Shamrocks? Maybe. The color green? Possibly. Parades and good music? Could be. Ask most people what they think of when St. Patrick’s Day is mentioned and they’ll likely circle around to plenty of adult beverages, lots of raucous action, and a good chance of calling in “sick” to work the next day.

But keep in mind that while this version of St. Paddy’s Day may be right up your alley, there is a huge contingent of people who are interested in having a good time, while simultaneously including their family members (old and young) in the festivities. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate this light-hearted holiday in Vegas and want to party with everyone in the family, here are some of our top ideas for 2017

Everyone Loves a Parade

The city of Henderson hosts an annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival in Las Vegas that spans four days (one for each leaf of the luckiest of clovers!) and kicks off on March 10th. The event is free and open to people of all ages. This year marks the 51st anniversary of the first “Shamrocks and Shenanigans” parade hosted by the city of Henderson, and it promises to be a family-friendly experience you’ll look forward to every year.

BLOQ Party Fun

If you don’t want to take the family to Henderson, consider visiting The LINQ Hotel & Casino and check out O’Sheas BLOQ Party this year. The festivities start at noon on March 17th and are packed full of St. Patrick’s Day-themed entertainment options like bag pipers and live bands, a famous beer pong challenge, leprechauns, stilt walkers, and more. Drink specials will appeal to the adults in your crowd, while the green-tinted High Roller Observation Wheel, Vortex at the LINQ, and LINQ fountains will keep the younger members of your group engaged.

Green Waters and Irish Celebrations

Think you have to visit Chicago to see the famous “green-dyed Chicago river” on St. Patrick’s Day? Think again. Each year on this festive holiday, the merrymakers at Vegas’ New York-New York Casino dye their famous fountains green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, and they also host a wild 2-day party with a decidedly Irish flair (Friday March 17 and Saturday March 18, 2017). Nine Fine Irishmen provide tasty treats, cocktails are never-ending for the adults in your group, and live entertainment is available to suit the tastes of anyone in your group. The parade is free, but the admission to the main event is just $10 for guests 21 and over only.

St. Patrick’s Day promises to be a blast for you and your entire family. This year, consider staying somewhere off the Strip. You’ll enjoy a quieter, more relaxing experience while still enjoying close proximity to all of the St. Patrick’s Day action in the heart of Las Vegas.

What Does Your Cocktail Say About You

Whether you’re headed out to a bar or plan on mixing up a few of your favorite cocktails in your resort room, what does your favorite drink say about you?

You have two drink options in front of you – a glass of 2005 Chateau Montrose or a six-pack of IPA – which do you choose? Some of us would jump at the chance to sample a $170 bottle of wine, while others can’t resist the hoppy indulgence of a good quality pale ale. Your drink of choice says something about you; kind of like a drinker’s horoscope. Find out which category fits you best.

The Rebel:

If you like to order off-the-beaten-path alcohols like absinthe, you may live by the motto, “It’s better to be a liver than to have one!” This drink of choice is for rebellious, edgy individuals, who aren’t concerned about the lack of feeling in their legs, as long as they’re having a good time. They often have a tight group of friends, so someone is usually available to drive them home.

The College Kid:

Are shots of Fireball a regular part of your weekend activity? When it comes to alcohol, you’ll take it cheap and fast. If you only head to the convenience store when you need to stock up on grain alcohol and carbonated mixers, you might fall into this drinking group.

The Throwback:

You loved the 90s and continue to drink the cocktails of the era by ordering a Cosmopolitan or Daiquiri whenever you go out. If you drank it in college and still like to order it now, your drink of choice might be a Lemon Drop martini or a vodka cranberry because a classic never dies.

The Achiever:

Campari & soda is a mixed drink that says: “I am in control of my career, my life, and my destiny.” It is light in terms of alcohol content, so you’ll be ready to network with other like-minded individuals at any time. You’re a winner, so drink like it!

The Tough Guy:

If you drink Jager Bombs, Irish Car Bombs, or any other drink with the word “bomb” in it, you may be in the tough guy crew. They can throw drinks back better than anyone and sipping is not part of the verbiage used for a night out drinking for them.

The Grown-Up:

If you’ve moved beyond the Jack and Coke crowd, but still haven’t entered full-on Hennessey mode, you’re probably a fan of Manhattans. Late 20s to early 30s drinkers are often fond of the Manhattan, as it is a mature drink, but still rewards you with the ultimate prize after the drink is gone – a cherry at the bottom!

The Perennial Partier:

Margaritas fit this group like a glove. Whatever the occasion, margaritas are always a popular drink of choice among those always up for a good time. Margaritas are the ultimate party drink and blended is higher on the fun scale than on the rocks.

The Hipster:

This group of ironic, mustached individuals love to drink moonshine. Why? Possibly because it represents a less-corporate approach to drinking. It is also ironic because it represents a drink that people in the country make in a bathtub out of necessity, while “city” moonshine is generally brewed in a several thousand-dollar setup.

Regardless of the type of cocktail you prefer, remember your favorite drink of choice can be mixed up right in your own resort suite kitchen when you stay at Tahiti Village. Don’t worry too much about whether you’re a “Grown-up” “Tough Guy” or “Achiever,” you can simply sit back and enjoy your surroundings 365 days a year at our incredible Las Vegas retreat.

Valentine’s Day: Las Vegas Style

Ready to treat your special someone to an unforgettable time this Valentine’s Day? Vegas is a city designed to help you do just that!

Valentine’s Day is all about the romance. From flowers to a nice dinner, cute and personal gifts to romantic evenings in, each of us has our own interpretation of what constitutes the ideal Valentine’s Day. But one thing is for sure – you’ll have no problem creating the ultimate celebration when you spend time in Vegas during the holiday. Here are some ideas to rev up your plans for romance:

See a Show

Sure, you can find plenty of shows in Las Vegas that feature scantily-clad performers, but many of these venues don’t exactly exude romance. Instead, score tickets for Zumanity, the Sensual Side of Cirque du Soleil, which combines stunning feats of strength and flexibility with a sensual overtone. Le Reve – The Dream, is another romantic show that captivates with its theatrics and staging.

Experience the World

Instead of purchasing expensive international airfare for an overseas vacation, visit Vegas and watch the fountains of Bellagio, visit the Eiffel Tower, or take a gondola right down the “canals” of Venice at the Venetian all in one day. For a Polynesian-style mini-vacation, lounge poolside at Tahiti Village and be wrapped up in the ultimate relaxation locale right in the heart of the desert.

Let Romance Fly High

Combine a bit of romance with a touch of excitement and you’ll create a memorable Valentine’s Day this year. To do so, consider booking a serene and romantic hot air balloon ride with Vegas Balloon Rides – you’ll see the Vegas Strip and Red Rock Canyon from hundreds of feet up. Or, up the excitement factor a bit by hopping on an old-school biplane for an evening ride over the Vegas Strip, courtesy of Sky Combat Ace. If you’re up for it (and your companion is, too) head over to the Stratosphere and bungee jump hundreds of feet over the city streets for an experience that will really get your heart racing.

Get Hitched

Valentine’s Day is a popular day for weddings and Las Vegas welcomes more than 80,000 people each year to officially “tie the knot.” So why not make it official and get married to your special someone. You’ll already be in one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in the world – so you can take care of everything in one spot.

This Valentine’s Day, pour on the romance and show your partner how truly important they are to you. Visit Vegas this coming holiday, and find out why it is the perfect spot for lovers. Las Vegas offers an incredible assortment of romantic things to do – and none are more than a few steps away.
