The Best Sunscreens to use on your Vegas Vacation

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed a new emphasis on sun care. Gone are the days of Jersey Shore tanning beds, and Hawaiian Tropic suntan oil with a -4 SPF. Amongst some of their more questionable revolutions, Self Care seems to be one of the more merit-based trends millennials have pushed into the mainstream- and with good reason. It only takes one glance at tanning addicted boomer skin to thwart any craving for UVA or UVB rays, and with more than 90% of skin cancers caused by sun exposure, perhaps it’s time to start acquiescing to this self-care trend. Here is your guide to navigating this bright new world of sunscreen obsession taking over the world. (And Tik Tok)

WTF is SPF

According to the FDA, “SPF is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (i.e., in the presence of sunscreen) relative to the amount of solar power required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin. As the SPF value increases, sunburn protection increases.

There is a popular misconception that SPF relates to time of solar exposure. For example, many consumers believe that, if they normally get sunburn in one hour, then an SPF 15 sunscreen allows them to stay in the sun 15 hours (i.e., 15 times longer) without getting sunburn. This is not true because SPF is not directly related to time of solar exposure but to amount of solar exposure. Although solar energy amount is related to solar exposure time, there are other factors that impact the amount of solar energy. For example, the intensity of the solar energy impacts the amount. The following exposures may result in the same amount of solar energy:

  • one hour at 9:00 a.m.
  • 15 minutes at 1:00 p.m. Generally, it takes less time to be exposed to the same amount of solar energy at midday compared to early morning or late evening because the sun is more intense at midday relative to the other times. Solar intensity is also related to geographic location, with greater solar intensity occurring at lower latitudes. Because clouds absorb solar energy, solar intensity is generally greater on clear days than cloudy days.”

Other factors and variables like melanin content and application frequency also affect the level of exposure. As a general rule of thumb, applying two finger lengths worth of sunscreen yields about the suggested 1/4 teaspoon amount to supply ample face coverage or three-finger lengths to yield the recommended 1/3-1/2 teaspoon amount to cover the face and neck.

The consensus amongst medical experts is a minimum Broad Spectrum SPF of 30, but an SPF of 50 or above is ideal. The protection factor between an SPF 50 and SPF 100 is trivial and usually not worth the increased white cast if you’re in the market for a Moi real biased sunscreen.

Outside of the US, you’ll find the PA+ rating system. According to Paula’s Choice, ‘the letters “PA” followed by plus signs (PA+, PA++, PA+++, and PA++++) on a label are a rating system developed in Japan to represent how much UVA protection the product offers.”

Mineral or Chemical?

Mineral, ‘Physical,’ or Inorganic sunscreens contain a group of mineral oxides such as titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. This family of sunscreens works by reflecting and scattering UV rays away from the skin. However, a deeper science dive will reveal they work more like Chemical filters, which absorb the UV rays into your skin and convert them into heat.
Physical sunscreens are less cosmetically elegant, and most will give you that dreaded white cast. Although the technology and development have come a long way- inspired by the millennial obsession for sun protection- even the tinted versions or products containing ‘universal’ masking tints may not bode well on every skin tone- especially those with a Fitzpatrick of 3 and higher. If you have sensitive skin, though- you may want to opt for a Mineral-based formula.

If you’re choosing a chemical formula, try exploring the European and Asian sunscreens that employ more sophisticated filters not yet approved by our antiquated FDA regulations. Most of these formulas are very cosmetically elegant and impart no white cast whatsoever.

One of the questions that we are asked more than many others on social media is people wanting to know the best time to visit Las Vegas. The tricky part is that the answer comes down to what people are looking to do while they are visiting Las Vegas because for people looking to hang out at a fantastic pool with sandy beach entry like the one at Tahiti Village is entirely different than someone looking for lower rates to come to town and see shows and enjoy some of the fantastic fine dining options in town. In this post, we will try to cover the many different types of visitors and what likely works the best for them. Average Temperatures in Las Vegas

Being a desert city, the temperatures in Las Vegas can swing more than 30 degrees in a day from the lows to the highs. Depending on the time of year, that may mean you need to start the day in a light jacket or a sweater, and by the afternoon, you are comfortably lounging by the pool. You may be wondering what caused that spike in July. In Las Vegas, we have a summer monsoon season that can cause afternoon thunderstorms to flare up over parts of the valley. While the rain can be an inconvenience for some, many others enjoy watching the lightning from a distance at night since most of the storms get hung on the mountains surrounding the city.

Best Time for Lounging By the Pool in Las Vegas

This is a 2 part question unless you are a fan of the summer heat. The pool season officially kicks off in Las Vegas in mid-March at most properties, though at Tahiti Village, we keep the pool and lazy river heated in the winter so guests can enjoy them all year long.

For visitors looking to spend their entire day & afternoon lounging in the sun, swimming, and enjoying a refreshing drink, we recommend late March through late May and late August through early October. This gives you the best chance to arrive at the pool when it opens and be comfortable all day while you soak up some sun. Just be sure to wear sunscreen to keep from getting burned. Even in cooler temperatures, the UV index in Las Vegas will still cause sunburns.

If you love the heat and the action, then mid-summer months are perfect for you! The pools are busy, the music is on, and the summer pool party vibe is in full swing all across the city. While temperatures will typically be over 100 degrees for a high every day from July through August, the vibes by the pool are also going to be the highest. Just wear some sandals when walking around the pools because the pool deck will be hot.

Best Time for Outdoor Adventures around Las Vegas

Many people looking for desert adventures will stay away from the hot summer months for safety reasons, which is certainly understandable. While short hikes can be safer options, avoiding the summer heat is a good idea if you want something more extreme. For rock climbers looking to climb the longer routes, the season typically starts in November and can run through late March if the weather cooperates.

The winter is typically also the busiest time of the year for the Red Rock Scenic loop drive. In 2020 the park began a reservation system to limit the number of people entering the park at any given hour the gates are open. Because of this, we highly recommend reserving your entry time in advance before you depart for your adventure!

Many national parks are within a 3-4 hour drive of Las Vegas that will give you some of Mother Nature’s most scenic views. Death Valley, Zion National Park, and the Valley of Fire are popular day trip destinations for people looking to see some of the most picturesque views that the Southwestern US offers. If the Grand Canyon is on your bucket list, you can reach the south rim in only 2.5 hours from Las Vegas. If you want to experience the Sky Walk, you’ll want to plan and get your tickets before you leave Las Vegas to make sure your spot is reserved because this is one of the most popular ways for people to see the Grand Canyon.

Best Time to Visit Las Vegas for Nightlife

The nightclubs in Las Vegas will always be when the city is the busiest. For visitors looking for the best nightclub experience, the Summer & Fall seasons will be the best time to visit. There are enough nightclubs on the strip to warrant their post but always plan by reaching out to promoters or looking for online VIP access.

Shows in Las Vegas operate all year long, so you can easily see any of them regardless of the time of year you visit.
